The Ken Brown Recovery Home (KBRH) is a Residential Addiction Treatment facility providing a supportive Home for men who are committed to and seeking recovery from Substance Use Disorder. Finding recovery from the illness of Addiction is one of the hardest things a person will do. KBRH offers those who seek help the hope and courage to change, heal and grow.
We promote personal responsibility and encourage peer support to adopt and maintain a new way of life. Through care, counselling, and therapy, our Residential Treatment programs assist our Residents in achieving a contented, sustainable,
long-term recovery.
For over 50 years, the Ken Brown Recovery Home has provided Residential Addiction Treatment programs for men 16 years of age and older in a supportive housing environment. Our Substance Use Disorder programs span the continuum of care from intervention, treatment and prevention, incorporating evidence-based treatment methodologies, including Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral therapies, individual counselling, group therapy and the 12-step philosophy of recovery.
Located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the Home's physical environment resists the pressures of larger urban centres, providing Addiction Treatment in a smaller scale atmosphere where low resident-counsellor ratios are best suited for treatment and recovery. This successful, demonstrated approach enables residents to maximize their experience and interactions with fellow Residents and Counsellors alike.
The Ken Brown Recovery Home program was developed in collaboration with addiction and Mental Health care professionals and 12-step communities. One of the founding trustees and board chairs of the KBRH was Dr. Dominic Tang. Dr. Tang was a pioneer in recognizing the link between Mental health and Addiction long before it was widely accepted, and he took a leadership role in providing services to this community. Dr. Tang was the 2010 winner of the prestigious Dr. William Hutchinson award for distinguished contributions to health care in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma, where he has generously served his community for nearly five decades.
The Ken Brown Recovery Home namesake is a tribute to Sault native and veteran Mr. Ken Brown. For many years, until 2019, the name of the Recovery Home had officially been Sault Ste. Marie Alcohol Recovery Home Inc, however, it had always been better known as Ken Brown Recovery Home. At the time of his sudden death while at work on March 17, 1975, on the eve of his retirement as a journalist with the Sault Star, Mr. Brown continued to commit himself once again to helping others in his community and fellow citizens. The official name change is a grateful tribute to his tireless work as a charter member of Alcohol Recovery Home, Inc., and his dedication to establishing this facility. As a recovering alcoholic, Mr. Brown developed empathy for the powerless alcoholic and focused on the need to help those who still suffered from this illness. It was another manifestation of the man who always cheerfully "walked the second mile".
